Chapter 10
Alfred trudged up the steep incline, along the dusty dirt road that ran up the lengthy hill. The months were growing colder as they approached winter, and it was shown in the way the grass was becoming tinged with death, their evergreen strands transforming into a melancholy khaki color, often topped with a light frost. The golden haired boy wore his work jacket (the thickest coat he owned) and a knitted scarf was wrapped snugly around his barren neck. He could faintly see his breath crystallize before his eyes as he exhaled, a sign of the bitter cold. Cheeks flushed red, he continued to walk, desperately wishing that he were elsewhere, preferably by a warm and cozy fire, snuggled up under an abundance of blankets with Matthew.
But no. Instead of snuggling with his brother, his twin had cruelly sent him out into this frigid air in order to deliver a package. Alfred briefly schemed the many ways he could get Mattie back for this. It was freezing outside! Must have been 10 degrees below the freezing point, and he was stuck carrying a package to the farthest possible recipient from the town. Of course, exactly whom that recipient was might have played a factor in Alfred’s agitation. It wasn’t that he didn’t like this recipient, he was just…nervous. The young male had never stepped foot in Mr. Braginsky’s mansion before.
